Exclusive Interview With Timothy Rexius: The Omaha Entrepreneur Who Built a Health and Fitness Empire One Handshake at a Time

Exclusive Interview With Timothy Rexius: The Omaha Entrepreneur Who Built a Health and Fitness Empire One Handshake at a Time

There is a line on the Rexius Nutrition website that says more about how Timothy Rexius thinks than any press release or award citation ever could. It sits on the About Us page, quietly, without fanfare: “I put my name on the store to show people that we are very proud of what we’ve created here and to let you know who is behind the handshake when you come into one of our locations.”

That sentence, personal accountability made structural, pride made literal, is the organising philosophy of an entrepreneurial career that has taken a single supplement store at 120th and Center in Omaha, Nebraska, and turned it into a multi-brand health and fitness ecosystem spanning 17 retail locations across six states, three Iron Heaven Gyms, a protein popcorn brand distributing to 16 countries in 16 months, and a consulting and keynote speaking practice that reaches business owners across the globe.

Timothy D. Rexius is the President and CEO of Rexius Nutrition Inc. and Rexius Franchising LLC, Co-Owner of Iron Heaven Gyms, Founder and President of VHI Nutraceuticals and Omaha Protein Popcorn, and the driving force behind Rexius Business Consulting. He has been named Entrepreneur of the Year for the Midlands by the Midlands Business Journal, recognised as a Top 40 Under 40, honoured as the Face of Omaha for All Things Nutrition, featured as an Influential CEO Transforming Health, Fitness, and Lifestyle Brands by The Elite Success, and selected for inclusion in Marquis Who’s Who. He hosts the Now or Never podcast, speaks at events across the country, and is a father of six in a family of eight.

The scale is striking. The story behind it is more so.

The Education That Shaped the Entrepreneur

Timothy Rexius earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Marketing with a minor in Organic Chemistry from Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska, a combination that might look unusual on paper but that turned out to be exactly the right preparation for what he would build. Marketing gave him the commercial instincts to understand what customers needed before they could articulate it themselves. Organic chemistry gave him the scientific foundation to understand the products he would eventually build a retail empire around, and later, to create his own.

That dual foundation, commercial and scientific, runs through every business he has built.

Building a Knowledge-Based Retail Model

Rexius Nutrition was never simply a retail outlet. It was always a knowledge-based service delivered in a retail format: the internet’s pricing combined with the genuine expertise of a knowledgeable nutritional consultant, available in a physical store where customers could be seen, heard, and served as individuals rather than transactions.

A period of self-reliance earlier in his life, one he has described as instilling a lasting sense of gratitude that continues to drive his ambition, gave him something that formal education cannot provide: the understanding that nothing is guaranteed, and that the work required to build something durable has to be done by the person whose name is on the door.

One Store, One Problem, One Solution

When Tim and his wife Brittney opened Rexius Nutrition in 2010 at 120th and Center in Omaha, they were solving a problem they had experienced as consumers. The retail supplement industry at the time was characterised by two equally unsatisfying options: online retailers with competitive pricing but no guidance, and brick-and-mortar stores with knowledgeable staff who were primarily incentivised to sell their own private-label products at inflated prices.

A Different Retail Philosophy

The vision Rexius Nutrition was built around was direct: internet-competitive pricing combined with the genuine experience of a knowledgeable nutritional consultant in a brick-and-mortar store. The goal was to carry unique and exclusive national brands, provide personalised care and service, and earn customer trust daily rather than assuming it.

The model worked. Rexius Nutrition achieved a customer retention rate exceeding 90%, a number that speaks not to marketing effectiveness but to the quality of the in-store experience. In a category where consumers are often confused by competing claims and overwhelmed by product proliferation, a store staffed by people who genuinely understood the science and the customer’s individual goals was a structural differentiator. It still is.

Expanding the Rexius Nutrition Network

From that first location, Rexius Nutrition has expanded to include nine supplement stores in Nebraska and franchise stores in five other states. The total footprint has grown to 17 locations nationwide, a combination of corporate-owned and franchise locations, with almost 40 real estate transactions completed as the network has expanded. The franchise model was built around a principle Tim has stated publicly: every Rexius store should be owned by a member of the local community, someone who sees their customers at Little League games, at track meets, at the grocery store. The owners and employees of Rexius stores care about the people they serve because they are part of the same community.

That insistence on community ownership as the foundation of the franchise model is not a sentiment. It is a commercial strategy, one that produces the kind of genuine customer relationships that no centrally managed chain can manufacture.

Iron Heaven: Building the Other Side of the Equation

In 2017, Tim expanded into a complementary vertical with the co-ownership of Iron Heaven Gyms, a move that reflected his understanding of the relationship between nutrition and fitness as two sides of the same equation rather than separate markets. Iron Heaven has since grown to three locations in the Omaha area.

Creating an Integrated Fitness Ecosystem

The gym operation extends the Rexius brand’s core philosophy into a physical training environment: knowledgeable staff, genuine community focus, and a commitment to the member’s actual fitness outcomes rather than simply their membership fees. For customers who are already part of the Rexius Nutrition community, Iron Heaven represents a natural extension of a relationship built on trust and results. For the gyms’ own members, the connection to Rexius Nutrition’s expertise in supplements, custom meal planning, and nutritional guidance provides a level of integrated support that standalone gym operators rarely offer.

The two businesses reinforce each other in the market in a way that strengthens both, a strategic integration that reflects Tim’s broader approach to building a health and fitness ecosystem rather than a collection of disconnected businesses.

Omaha Protein Popcorn: From Concept to 16 Countries in 16 Months

The most commercially striking chapter of Timothy Rexius’s recent entrepreneurial arc has been the launch and international expansion of Omaha Protein Popcorn, a brand built around a product concept so straightforward it is remarkable that nobody had executed it at scale before: protein-enriched popcorn that tastes exceptional and happens to be healthy, rather than healthy food that asks consumers to accept inferior taste as the price of better nutrition.

A Product Built Around Taste

The founding insight was direct. As Tim has said publicly: once people try it and discover that healthy snacks do not need to taste terrible, that there does not need to be a sacrifice of flavour to be healthy, the brand wins every time. The live sampling strategy deployed at Hy-Vee locations across Nebraska proved this empirically: every tasting event sold out, requiring extra cases to be brought to keep up with demand.

Global Expansion

Within 16 months of launch, Omaha Protein Popcorn was distributing to 16 different countries, an international expansion pace that Tim has described as remarkable, and one that reflected both genuine product-market fit and the operational infrastructure he had built across his other businesses. The brand’s retail debut in grocery stores represented a significant milestone, elevating the company’s profile beyond the supplement and gym categories and into the mainstream consumer packaged goods space.

Looking ahead, Tim is committed to expanding Omaha Protein Popcorn’s reach into gas stations, grocery stores, and airports worldwide, a distribution strategy that would place the brand in front of precisely the time-pressed, health-conscious consumer who is most likely to reach for a better snack option when one is made available and the taste delivers on its promise.

The international success of OPP has also provided Tim with a candid data point about the domestic grocery market: breaking into major US chains, Kroger, Publix, Costco, Walmart, is significantly harder than international distribution, where the brand has found partners and momentum with relative speed. His public acknowledgement of this challenge, and his equally public determination to solve it through whatever combination of broker relationships, direct outreach, and persistence the market requires, is characteristic of his approach to business building generally. He does not pretend the hard things are easy. He does them anyway.

VHI Nutraceuticals and the Science Behind the Brand

Parallel to the retail and consumer product businesses, Tim co-founded VHI Nutraceuticals, a supplements company that takes the scientific dimension of his background in organic chemistry and applies it to product development rather than simply retail.

Moving Up the Value Chain

VHI represents Tim’s move up the value chain, from selling others’ products to creating his own, a transition that reflects both his accumulated knowledge of what customers actually want from their supplements and his confidence in the scientific foundation he brings to product formulation.

The combination of VHI’s product development capability, Rexius Nutrition’s retail network, and Omaha Protein Popcorn’s consumer brand creates a vertically integrated health and nutrition ecosystem that is unusual in the independent operator space, most of which is either product companies without retail distribution or retail operators without product development capability. Tim has built both, and the strategic leverage they provide each other is a material competitive advantage.

Rexius Business Consulting, Now or Never, and the Broader Mission

Beyond the businesses themselves, Tim Rexius has built a significant platform as a keynote speaker, business coach, and podcast host, work that reflects a conviction he has articulated consistently throughout his career: that his personal mission extends beyond his own companies to the broader goal of helping other entrepreneurs reach for more and become the best versions of themselves.

Coaching Entrepreneurs Worldwide

Rexius Business Consulting was founded to coach and mentor business owners across the globe, drawing on the hard-won operational experience of building multiple businesses simultaneously across retail, manufacturing, fitness, and consumer products. The Now or Never podcast, which Tim co-hosts, has built an audience of entrepreneurs seeking both practical guidance and the kind of honest, direct perspective that comes from someone who is actively building rather than retrospectively advising.

Leadership Beyond Business

He has served as president of the Chamber of Commerce and is an active member of the National Federation of Independent Business and Food Exports USA, affiliations that reflect his commitment to the broader business community in Omaha and to the advancement of independent business interests at the national level.

The speaking practice brings Tim into contact with students, athletes, and entrepreneurs at every stage of their development, a diversity of audience that he approaches with the same directness. His message is consistent across all of them: make your passion your paycheck, invest in knowledge, build with discipline, and understand that real success is not a sprint but a sustained commitment to showing up. The philosophy is captured in the phrase he has made his own: It’s either Now or Never.

The Family That Builds Alongside Him

No account of Timothy Rexius’s career is complete without the recognition that every business he has built has been built alongside his wife Brittney, a partner whose determination he describes as one of the defining forces of everything they have created together. They are a family of eight, with six children, and the way Tim talks about his family makes clear that the businesses are not separate from the life they are building, they are the same project, pursued with the same values.

Recognition and Legacy

His accomplishments have been recognised through several honours, including being named Entrepreneur of the Year for the Midlands in 2014 and receiving recognition as the Face of Omaha for All Things Nutrition. He has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who’s Who. He has been featured as an Influential CEO Transforming Health, Fitness, and Lifestyle Brands by The Elite Success in 2026.

The recognition matters less than what it represents, a body of work built over fifteen years from a single store in Omaha to a multi-brand enterprise operating across six states and sixteen countries, with a consulting practice, a podcast, a speaking career, and a family of eight woven through all of it.

Timothy Rexius put his name on the door in 2010 to show people who was behind the handshake. Fifteen years later, the handshake has reached further than most people would have thought possible from that first location at 120th and Center. And by every indication, it is not finished reaching.
